بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.
1
وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَـٰتِ غَرْقًا wan nāzi`āti gharqā I CALL TO WITNESS those who dive and drag,
2
وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَـٰتِ نَشْطًا wan nāshiṭāti nashṭā And those who undo the bonds gently,
3
وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِ سَبْحًا was sābiḥāti sabḥā And those who glide swimmingly,
4
فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِ سَبْقًا fas sābiqāti sabqā Then outpace the others swiftly
5
فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمْرًا fal mudabbirāti amrā And direct affairs by command,
6
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ yawma tarjufur rājifah The day the convulsive (first blast) shatters convulsively
7
تَتْبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ tatba`uhar rādifah Followed by the second blast,
8
قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ qulūbun yawma-idhin wājifah Hearts will pound loudly on that day,
9
أَبْصَـٰرُهَا خَـٰشِعَةٌ abṣāruhā khāshi`ah Eyes be lowered in submission.
10
يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ yaqūlūna a-innā lamardūdūna fil ḥāfirah They say: "Shall we go back to our original state
11
أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَـٰمًا نَّخِرَةً a-idhā kunnā `iẓāman nakhirah After having turned to carious bones?"
12
قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ qālū tilka idhan karratun khāsirah They say: "Then this returning will be a dead loss."
13
فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidah It will only be a single blast,
14
فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ fa-idhā hum bis sāhirah And they will wake up suddenly.
15
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ hal atāka ḥadīthu mūsā Has the story of Moses come to you
16
إِذْ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى idh nādāhu rabbuhu bil wādil muqaddasi ṭuwā When his Lord called to him in Tuwa's holy vale?
17
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ idh-hab ilā fir`awna innahu ṭaghā "Go to the Pharaoh who has become refractory,
18
فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ faqul hal laka ilā an tazakkā And say: 'Would you like to grow (in virtue)?
19
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ wa-ahdiyaka ilā rabbika fatakhshā Then I will guide you to your Lord that you may come to fear Him.'"
20
فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْـَٔايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ fa-arāhul-āyatal kubrā So he showed him the greater sign;
21
فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ fakadhhaba wa`aṣā But (the Pharaoh) disavowed and disobeyed.
22
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ thumma adbara yas`ā Then he turned away, deliberating,
23
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ faḥashara fanādā And assembled (his council) and proclaimed,
24
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ faqāla ana rabbukumul-a`lā Saying: "I am alone your lord, the highest of them all."
25
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ fa-akhadhahullāhu nakālal-ākhirati wal-ūlā So God seized him for the punishment of the Hereafter and this world.
26
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ inna fī dhālika la`ibratan liman yakhshā Truly there is a lesson in this for those who fear (the consequences).
27
ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا a-antum ashaddu khalqan amis samā-u ۚ banāhā Are you more difficult to create or the heavens? He built it,
وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا wa-aghṭasha laylahā wa-akhraja ḍuḥāhā Gave darkness to its night, and brightness to its day;
30
وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ wal-arḍa ba`da dhālika daḥāhā And afterwards spread out the earth.
31
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا akhraja minhā mā-ahā wa mar`āhā He brought out its water and its pastures from it,
32
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا wal jibāla arsāhā And stabilized the mountains
33
مَتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ matā`al lakum wali-an`āmikum As convenience for you and your cattle.
34
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ fa-idhā jā-atiṭ ṭāmmatul kubrā When the great calamity comes,
35
يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ yawma yatadhakkarul-insānu mā sa`ā The day when man remembers all that he had done,
36
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ waburrizatil jaḥīmu liman yarā And Hell made visible to him who can see,
37
فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ fa-ammā man ṭaghā Then he who had been rebellious
38
وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا wa-ātharal ḥayātad dunyā And who preferred the life of the world,
39
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ fa-innal jaḥīma hiyal ma-wā Will surely have Hell for his abode.
40
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ wa-ammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihi wanahan nafsa `anil hawā But he who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained his self from vain desires,
41
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ fa-innal jannata hiyal ma-wā Will surely have Paradise for abode.
42
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا yas-alūnaka `anis sā`ati ayyāna mursāhā They ask you: "When will the Hour be? When is its time fixed?"
43
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ fīma anta min dhikrāhā What do you have to do with explaining it?
44
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ ilā rabbika muntahāhā The extent of its knowledge goes to your Lord.
45
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا innamā anta mundhiru man yakhshāhā Your duty is only to warn him who fears it.
46
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا ka-annahum yawma yarawnahā lam yalbathū illā `ashiyyatan aw ḍuḥāhā The day they see it, it will seem they had stayed in the world but only an evening or its turning into dawn.
